Understanding Compound Numbers in Modern Numerology
The Scale of Tens and Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa
Agrippa, the grandfather of modern numerology, wrote De Occulta Philosophia as a guide for using occult knowledge to understand the world. In Book II, he explains how a single-digit “seed” number can grow into a greater celestial or worldly power. Today, we might say that number energies are not fixed labels, but more like waves or energy spectra.
What I want to do today is look at the “Scale of Tens” (10–90) and discuss what it actually means to “go up an octave” in a number. We hear this all the time from New Age creators and read it in books, yet no one really knows how to explain what it means beyond a lot of hand-waving and talk about “big changes” or “new energy”. That isn’t very helpful, is it?
The Theory: Earthly Seeds vs. Celestial Power
Agrippa believed that context is a key principle in magic. He thought that multiplying a number by 10 creates a major shift. This process moves a number from the earthly realm, which is personal and immediate, to the heavenly realm, which is universal and broad.
When you “go up an octave,” you are not just increasing a number or making it feel more important. You are actually changing the setting where that number works. For example, if 1 is a personal beginning, 10 is the Denary, which marks the end of a cycle. At this point, it is no longer about the individual, but about the Universal Mind.
